About The Equalizer
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, The Equalizer stars Denzel Washington, Marton Csokas, Chloë Grace Moretz, David Harbour, Bill Pullman, and Melissa Leo. It was released in the year 2014.
The Equalizer is one of many great action movies that pumps up the adrenaline and non-stop violence. It focuses on a former U.S. Marine turned DIA intelligence officer who returns to action to protect a teenage prostitute from the Russian mob.
After a recent re-watch I began to think of other movies like The Equalizer who fans of vigilante and assassin films would enjoy. Let us know if you’ve seen any of these.
25. Hitman (2007)
Hitman drops Timothy Olyphant into the barcode and blood-soaked shoes of Agent 47, a genetically engineered assassin with the emotional range of a brick wall and the precision of a scalpel. One botched contract on a Russian president spirals into a cocktail of double-crosses, body doubles, and international bloodshed.
Instead of just ghosting his mark, 47 finds himself hunted by Interpol, the Russian military, and even his own shadowy employers. Enter Nika (Olga Kurylenko), the kind of femme fatale who turns a man-shaped weapon into something almost human. Bullets fly, blades glint, and by the time the smoke clears, 47 has outmanoeuvered governments, gangsters, and his own creators – only to vanish back into the darkness, untouchable and unrepentant.
It’s a slick, cold-blooded, videogame assassin fantasy that trades depth for spectacle but still delivers the operatic gun-fu carnage that fans signed up for.
24. Extraction (2020)
Directed by Sam Hargrave, Extraction stars Chris Hemsworth, Rudhraksh Jaiswal, Randeep Hooda, Priyanshu Painyuli, Golshifteh Farahani, Pankaj Tripathi, and David Harbour. It was released in the year 2020.
Extraction is about an Aussie black ops operative who’s sent on a mission to save the son of an Indian crime lord. However, when he’s double crossed, the storyline spirals out of control. What follows is a ballet of brutality: one-shot firefights, bone-crunching brawls, and chase scenes that feel like they were shot inside a collapsing building. It’s a mission doomed from the start, drenched in blood, sweat, and emotional shrapnel as Rake bulldozes through armies of hired killers just to keep one terrified kid alive.
But beneath all the carnage lies something surprisingly human. Extraction isn’t just about bullets flying – it’s about redemption clawing its way out of a body count. Rake’s haunted by the ghost of his own child, and saving this boy becomes his last-ditch confession to the universe. It helps that the Director, Sam Hargrave, is a former stunt coordinator for the Avengers, so if Chris Hemsworth’s moves feel a little like he’s cosplaying Thor – then you know why.
23. Seeking Justice (2012)
Directed by Roger Donaldson, Seeking Justice stars Nicolas Cage, January Jones, Harold Perrineau, Jennifer Carpenter, Xander Berkeley and Guy Pearce. It was released in the year 2012.
Seeking Justice centers on Will Gerard (portrayed by Nicolas Cage) who is approached by a Stranger after Will’s wife is brutally assaulted and the perpetrator can’t be found. The Stranger (Guy Pearce) says he represents an organisation who can get justice for Will and his wife outside the usual rules of the law. However, when the criminal is caught and ends up murdered, Will begins to realise he’s in too deep.
As the paranoia tightens its grip, Seeking Justice morphs from revenge thriller into a conspiracy fever dream soaked in late-night neon and post-9/11 distrust. Cage plays it like a man haunted by every bad decision he’s ever made – wild-eyed, weary, and one step from breaking. The city of New Orleans becomes a character of its own, rotting and beautiful, mirroring the moral decay at the film’s heart. Seeking Justice is a greasy, pulpy cautionary tale about what happens when vengeance starts wearing a suit – and the cost of mistaking retribution for salvation.
22. Wrath of Man (2021)
Directed by Guy Ritchie, Wrath of Man stars Jason Statham, Holt McCallany, Jeffrey Donovan, Josh Hartnett, Laz Alonso, Paul Eagle, Raúl Castillo, DeObia Oparei, Eddie Marsan, and Scott Eastwood. It was released in the year 2021.
Wrath of Man follows cash truck driver H who thwarts a robbery and whose violent past is gradually revealed. Trust me, it’s more fun than it sounds. Turns out H isn’t there to protect the money; he’s there to find the men who murdered his son during a botched heist. What starts as a standard Guy Ritchie setup – armored cars, inside jobs, locker-room bravado – escalates into a cold, surgical revenge odyssey with epic fights and non-stop gunfire.
Wrath of Man plays like Heat drained of warmth. It’s a minimalist revenge machine powered by grief and gunmetal. Statham gives one of his iciest performances, stalking through the film like a Grim Reaper in tactical gear, methodically dismantling everyone between him and the truth.
21. Peppermint (2018)
Directed by Pierre Morel, Peppermint is a vigilante action movie starring Jennifer Garner, John Ortiz, John Gallagher Jr., Juan Pablo Raba, and Tyson Ritter. It was released in the year 2018.
Peppermint is probably the closest a movie with a female-lead can get to being The Punisher without actually being The Punisher or remotely linked to Marvel Studios. The story focuses on Riley, a woman whose family is killed by a gang, which then sends her on a vigilante crusade to get justice for her dead husband and dead daughter. What follows is a vengeance tour through Los Angeles that feels part John Wick, part Death Wish, and all righteous fury.
Gone is the sweet girl from Alias; Garner’s Riley is a force of nature carved out of trauma and sheer rage. Director Pierre Morel, the man behind Taken, brings his signature brand of stylish brutality to the table – fast cuts, explosive gunfights, and an undercurrent of tragic catharsis that hums beneath every headshot. Peppermint isn’t subtle, but that’s the point. Riley North doesn’t just get even – she burns the whole rotten orchard down and plants nothing but peppermint in its place.
20. Predestination (2014)
Written and directed by The Spierig Brothers, Predestination stars Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook, Noah Taylor, and Madeleine West. It was released in the year 2014.
Predestination is what happens when time travel and existential despair get drunk together and decide to ruin your brain. Ethan Hawke plays a Temporal Agent on his final mission – hunting a terrorist known as the Fizzle Bomber – but his pursuit spirals into a mind-melting paradox that folds reality like origami. When he meets a mysterious stranger (Sarah Snook) in a bar, the movie shifts gears from noir confessional to metaphysical trap. What starts as a simple conversation becomes a confession of identity, heartbreak, and twisted destiny, pulling both characters – and the audience – into a time loop so tightly wound it practically strangles logic.
By the time the final revelation hits, Predestination evolves from a sci-fi film into an identity crisis disguised as one. Sarah Snook’s performance is a revelation, carrying both the emotional core and the existential horror of being your own beginning, middle, and end. It’s Looper meets Memento by way of a fever dream -cerebral, cruel, and quietly devastating.
19. I Am Wrath (2016)
Directed by Chuck Russell, I Am Wrath stars John Travolta, Christopher Meloni, Sam Trammell, Amanda Schull, Patrick St. Esprit, Rebecca De Mornay and Luis Da Silva. It was released in the year 2016.
I Am Wrath focuses on John Travolta’s character Stanley Hill whose wife is stabbed and when he identifies the killer in a lineup the corrupt cops let him go. In turn, Stanley dusts off his mysterious past (turns out he’s ex–black ops) and decides to paint the town red – with the blood of his wife’s killer. Teaming up with his old buddy (Christopher Meloni), Stanley embarks on a one-man crusade against corrupt cops, career criminals, and politicians who’ve long forgotten the meaning of justice.
But beneath the cheap thrills and revenge-flick tropes, I Am Wrath carries a strange sincerity – a B-movie heartbeat pulsing under all the gunfire. Director Chuck Russell (The Mask, The Blob) frames it like a 90s throwback dipped in whiskey and gasoline, where every punch lands with the weight of personal apocalypse. Travolta is a ghost of a man rediscovering purpose through carnage. It’s pulpy, uneven, and occasionally ridiculous, but that’s its charm. I Am Wrath is vigilante therapy for the disillusioned, a cinematic primal scream that reminds you: sometimes redemption doesn’t come from forgiveness – it comes from a well-aimed right hook.
18. American Assassin (2017)
Directed by Michael Cuesta, American Assassin stars Dylan O’Brien, Michael Keaton, Sanaa Lathan, Shiva Negar, David Suchet, Navid Negahban, Scott Adkins, and Taylor Kitsch. It was released in the year 2017.
American Assassin is a complicated film about main character, Mitch, whose girlfriend dies in a terrorist attack. So, in a convoluted plan to put an end to terrorism, he joins the CIA and that’s when things start to get interesting. Under the cold, brutal guidance of veteran operative Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton), Mitch is reshaped from grief-fueled amateur to lethal professional in a shadow world of espionage.
Their mission? Stop a mysterious rogue agent – known as “Ghost” – who’s hell-bent on sparking a global nuclear conflict. What follows is a series of black-ops skirmishes, double-crosses, and moral implosions across Europe and the Middle East. By the time the bodies stop dropping, Mitch has completed his metamorphosis: no longer just a man seeking revenge, but an assassin perfectly at home in the darkness he once tried to destroy.
17. Man on Fire (2004)
Directed by Tony Scott, Man on Fire stars Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, Christopher Walken, Giancarlo Giannini, Radha Mitchell, Marc Anthony, Rachel Ticotin and Mickey Rourke. It was released in the year 2004.
Denzel Washington plays John Creasy, a burned-out ex–CIA operative drowning in alcohol and regret, who drifts into Mexico City and lands a gig as a bodyguard for Pita Ramos (Dakota Fanning), the young daughter of a wealthy family. What starts as another paycheck slowly transforms into something sacred – Creasy finds purpose again through her innocence, her trust, her small hand gripping his scarred one. But when Pita is kidnapped in a chaotic ambush, the fragile peace in Creasy’s soul detonates.
By the second half of the film, Creasy becomes a force of nature – stalking, torturing, and obliterating anyone connected to the abduction. Each kill is a confession, each explosion a prayer. Mexico City turns into his personal purgatory as he dismantles the kidnapping ring one sinner at a time. By the end, Creasy trades his life for Pita’s freedom, walking into the light – a man finally redeemed, not by forgiveness, but by the love he thought he’d lost forever.
16. Payback (1999)
Written and Directed by Brian Helgeland, Payback stars Mel Gibson, Gregg Henry, Maria Bello and David Paymer. It was released in the year 1999.
Payback is a gritty, hard-boiled revenge thriller starring Mel Gibson as Porter, a career criminal with one rule – get what’s his. After a heist with his partner Val and wife Lynn, Porter is double-crossed, shot in the back, and left for dead. But he survives, clawing his way back into the criminal underworld with one mission: recover the $70,000 that was stolen from him. What begins as a simple score turns into a brutal chain of confrontations with corrupt cops, mobsters, and a sadistic crime syndicate known as The Outfit.
Porter’s quest for repayment escalates into a darkly humorous bloodbath as he dismantles the hierarchy of the underworld one level at a time. Every threat, beating, and double-cross only sharpens his resolve, turning him into an unstoppable force of vengeance. By the film’s end, he outsmarts The Outfit, takes back his money, and disappears into the shadows – battered, bloodied, but victorious. It’s a noir tale where justice is as ruthless as the man delivering it.
15. The Man From Nowhere (2010)
Directed by Lee Jeong-beom, The Man from Nowhere stars Won Bin and Kim Sae-ron. It was released in the year 2010.
The Man from Nowhere tells the story of Cha Tae-sik, a quiet pawnshop owner whose only connection to the world is a neglected young girl named So-mi. When So-mi and her mother are kidnapped by a violent drug and organ trafficking ring, Tae-sik’s mysterious past resurfaces – he’s a former government agent trained to kill. Determined to save the girl, he embarks on a relentless and bloody mission that reveals the depth of his skill and the trauma he’s long tried to bury.
As Tae-sik tears through the criminal underworld, his rampage dismantles the trafficking network from the inside. Along the way, his bond with So-mi transforms his vengeance into redemption – a chance to reclaim the humanity he thought he’d lost. In a devastating finale, Tae-sik rescues So-mi and annihilates her captors before surrendering to police, exhausted and broken. Their final embrace brings a fleeting moment of warmth to an otherwise brutal story – a quiet reminder that compassion can still exist amid violence and loss.
14. Cold Pursuit (2019)
Directed by Hans Petter Moland, Cold Pursuit stars Liam Neeson, Tom Bateman, Tom Jackson, Emmy Rossum, Domenick Lombardozzi, Julia Jones, John Doman and Laura Dern. It was released in the year 2019.
Cold Pursuit follows Nels Coxman, a humble snowplow driver in a quiet Colorado ski town whose life unravels after his son is murdered by a drug cartel. When police dismiss the death as an overdose, Nels takes matters into his own hands, using his grit and ingenuity to hunt down those responsible. One by one, he eliminates members of the cartel, unknowingly sparking chaos within their ranks as rival factions begin turning on each other.
As bodies pile up, Nels’ personal vendetta escalates into a full-blown gang war between Viking, the ruthless cartel boss, and White Bull, a Native American kingpin seeking vengeance of his own. The two crime lords’ feud spirals out of control, culminating in a violent showdown that leaves both their empires in ruins. In the end, Nels quietly drives off into the snowy wilderness, his revenge complete – leaving behind a darkly comic trail of destruction buried beneath the Colorado frost.

John eventually tracks down the Elder, the only person above the High Table, and agrees to kill Winston, the manager of the New York Continental, in exchange for forgiveness. During the case, he’s introduced to a secret government project using experimental surveillance technology capable of viewing events exactly four and a half days in the past. While combing through the footage, Carlin becomes obsessed with a woman named Claire, whose apparent murder may be the key to solving the bombing.
When Carlin learns the technology can actually send objects – and people – back in time, he volunteers to go himself, determined to stop the attack and save Claire.
