‘GhostBox’ Goes Full Noir – And We’re Here For It

'GhostBox' Goes Full Noir – And We're Here For It

Stripping the Colour from GhostBox to Create Something New

Listen up, weirdos. Mike Carey and Pablo Raimondi just stripped the colour out of GhostBox and it’s somehow even more haunting than before.

Yeah, you read that right. Comixology Originals is doing something they’ve literally never done before – re-releasing a series in black-and-white. GhostBox: Black & White drops February 17, 2026, and if you thought the coloured version was atmospheric, wait until you see Raimondi’s linework without any safety nets.

Here’s the setup: Sisters Chloe and Jan Peace inherit their dead uncle’s weird shit. Chloe, being broke as hell, tries to sell off his stuff online – including this ornately carved wooden box that screams “DO NOT OPEN.” Someone wants it. Bad. The deal goes sideways, Chloe ends up arrested for murder, Jan vanishes, and everything spirals into supernatural nightmare territory that blends fantasy and horror in ways that’ll mess with your head.

The Context

The original series came with gorgeous colours by José Villarrubia, and don’t get us wrong – that version is stunning. But Raimondi’s raw artwork in pure black, white, and gray? That’s a whole different beast. It’s like watching a film noir fever dream unfold panel by panel. All those intricate details, all that haunting atmosphere – it hits different when there’s nowhere to hide.

Comixology GM Jeff DiBartolomeo saw the early B&W art during production and knew it was going to be spectacular even before the colours went on. Now we all get to experience what he saw first – and honestly, we’re kind of jealous he got the preview.

The black-and-white version launches as a 5-issue monthly series, with the first issue clocking in at a massive 42 pages. Plus they’re throwing in bonus material featuring Carey’s original manuscript for issue #1. If you’re into seeing how the sausage gets made, that’s pure gold.

And speaking of Mike Carey – this is the guy who gave us The Girl With All the Gifts, Lucifer, and The Unwritten. His horror chops are unquestionable. Raimondi’s credits include Sacred Creatures and runs on X-Factor and Books of Doom. Together they’ve built something that critics are calling “deeply atmospheric” and “a truly modern gothic that’s up there with Stephen King.”

What Critics Have Said

Kirkus gave it a starred review calling it “an action-packed, spine-tingling story that will consume the souls of all who read it – in a good way.” Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Saucer Country) says Carey keeps getting better. Klaus Janson (Daredevil, The Dark Knight Returns) is recommending it. That’s the kind of pedigree that gets our attention.

The colouur edition is still available digitally and in print from Mad Cave Studios – Volume 1 even includes an exclusive 10-page epilogue. But this black-and-white treatment is for the purists. The hardcore fans who fell in love with GhostBox. The ones who want to see every crosshatch, every shadow, every deliberate choice Raimondi made before the color went on.

GhostBox: Black & White is exclusively available from Comixology Originals, which means Prime members and Kindle Unlimited/Comixology Unlimited subscribers get it at no extra cost. Everyone else can grab it at amazon.com/comixology.

Bottom line: If you’re into supernatural horror that doesn’t play by the rules, if you appreciate the craft of comics as much as the story, if you want something that flips off the mainstream and goes full weird – this is your jam.

February 17. Mark it. And prepare to have your soul consumed.

In a good way.
